Security tightened at risk areas in Bangkok after U.S. warning

BANGKOK, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Stringent security measures have been in place in risk areas of Bangkok after U.S. embassy in Thailand issued warning message about possible terrorist threats.

Pol Gen Priewpan said on Saturday he had ordered the crime suppression division, metropolitan police and tourist police to ensure peace and order at these risk points, Bangkok Post reported.

The embassy of Israel, Khao San road and Phrom Phong area which are popular among tourists are places where tightened security measures taken place.

He said people should not panic because police are capable of keeping the situation under control.

Tight security in the capital came after the United States and Israel on Friday issued a warning of possible severe terrorist attacks in Bangkok.

Police detained a Lebanese suspect suspected of links to the Hezbollah militant group, according to authorities.

Deputy Prime Minister for security affairs Chalerm Yubamrung said police have the situation under control and urged the public not to panic.

The situation was not as severe as initially feared, he added.
