UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said here Saturday that peace and a pervasive sense of justice will be essential to increasing international development progress.

Her statements came as she addressed the general debate at the high-level plenary meeting of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly.

"I believe peace is the basis for development," said Hasina. " I also believe peace prevails when justice prevails."

Hasina said that her country has taken the concept of "no peace without justice" seriously, and had established a tribunal to try those responsible for war crimes committed during the Bangladeshi war of 1971 and become a party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

According to Hasina, Bangladesh is fully committed to establishing justice and encouraging peace by battling terrorism as well.
