Thai PM to visit Cambodia on Sept. 15

08:50, September 07, 2011

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The newly elected Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will make a one-day official visit to Cambodia on Sept. 15, said the spokesman for the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Koy Kuong on Tuesday.

"The visit is to pay a courtesy call on Cambodian leaders as Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra just becomes the new Thai Prime Minister," he told Xinhua by telephone. "It's common for leaders in ASEAN member countries to make foreign trips after taking office."

Koy Kuong said the visit would help restore relations between the two neighboring countries.

Cambodia and Thailand have had a sporadic border conflict over a territorial dispute near Cambodia's Preah Vihear temple since the UNESCO listed the temple as a World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008.

Since then, both sides have built up military forces along the border and periodic clashes have happened, resulting in the deaths of troops and civilians on both sides.

However, the military tension has eased since the former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's Pheu Thai Party won a landslide victory in the general elections on July 3.
