DPRK slams S. Korea over Jeju naval base project

08:32, September 07, 2011

PYONGYANG, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Tuesday denounced South Korea's plan to build a naval base at the Jeju Island.

The project is "a heinous criminal move" that will turn the island into a frontline and a logistic base against the DPRK and its neighboring countries, the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea (CPRK) warned in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

The DPRK will not allow the base to disturb the stability of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia as it would provide various means of attacks and make the peninsula and its vicinity face a constant war threat, the CPRK said.

It urged South Korean authorities to pay attention to public opinions at home and abroad and to halt the construction. It also warned that South Korea would face stronger protests and denunciation if it still goes ahead with the base project.
