ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Filipina wife of a British national was kidnapped late Sunday in the capital town of the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay, police and military said Monday.

Regional police director Chief Supt. Elpedio de Asis identified the abducted victim as Luisa Galvez Morrison, 34, married to a Scottish man. She resides in Magdaup village and operates a salon in Ipil, capital town of Zamboanga Sibugay.

Unidentified gunmen forcibly took Morrison around 7p.m Sunday to a yellow colored cab van at the business center of the town and escaped, said de Asis, adding alerted police and military forces conducted pursuit operations but failed to catch up with the suspects.

Brig. Gen. Santiago Baluyot, commander of the 102nd Army Brigade, said the pursuing government forces tracked down the getaway vehicle, which was burned by the abductors.

Baluyot said based on the information on the ground, the kidnappers withdrew towards Katipunan village in the same town with their captive.

Police and military said there was no immediate demand relayed by the kidnappers. Authorities were looking into the possibility that the woman could not be the real target of the kidnappers.
