SINGAPORE, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Land Transport Authority won the Edmund R. Ricker Transportation Safety Council Award for having the best road network in both design and safety, the authority said on Thursday.

The annual award comprises the individual and organization categories. Past winners include the World Bank, and city administrations in the United States and Australia.

It was presented at an annual ceremony of the Institute of Transportation Engineers in St Louis, Missouri, the United States on Monday, the authority said.

"Keeping our roads safe is a key tenet in ensuring a smooth traveling experience for our road users," said Chin Kian Keong, Land Transport Authority Group Director for Road Operations and Community Partnership.

The authority has conducted engineering design review before a road is built and adopted safety measures after a road is put in operation for years. It also installed Your-Speed-Signs, traffic calming measures, crash cushions, curve alignment markers, bus stop billiards and advance warning lights.

It also conducted regular studies on road systems of foreign countries to learn the latest road safety technology.

Established in 1930, the Institute of Transportation Engineers has members from more than 90 countries and regions.
