MANILA, Feb. 11 -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced on Tuesday that it has opened a satellite office in typhoon-stricken Tacloban City, Leyte province in central Philippines.

The Manila-based lender said the Tacloban office was established to coordinate and monitor the use of funds and advise local governments on their recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

ADB President Takehiko Nakao inaugurated the new office and visited affected communities in Leyte province.

Nakao assured survivors that the ADB remains committed to supporting typhoon survivors. Tacloban City was one of the cities that was badly hit by super typhoon Haiyan (local name: Yolanda).

Super typhoon Haiyan, which made landfall on Nov. 8, killed more than 6,000 people and damaged billions of pesos worth of properties, infrastructure, and crops.

To date, ADB has extended nearly 900 million U.S. dollars to the Philippine government for immediate recovery efforts and long- term reconstruction and rehabilitation.
