MANILA, Aug. 19 -- Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin on Monday called on Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding chair Nur Misuari to remain calm in his fight for independence to spare the innocent from untoward incidents.
"Our (appeal) is to do in calmly, in a peaceful way so that those who have nothing to do with this can be spared," Gazmin said in an ambush interview in Camp Aguinaldo.
The defense and military establishment is adopting the measures in the light of Misuari's recent declaration of independence under the so-called "Bangsamoro Republik", he said.
Misuari threatened to declare independence of Mindanao along with Palawan and Sabah in Sulu on belief that the peace process between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) is sidelining the 1996 peace agreement the MNLF signed with the government.
The MNLF has forces in various parts of Mindanao but Misuari's loyal followers are mostly based in Sulu.
Misuari's faction has expressed opposition to the proposed Bangsamoro entity under the peace talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
