VLADIVOSTOK, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A number of Tu-95MS strategic bombers are on patrol during Russia's ongoing large-scale snap combat readiness military exercise, the Itar-Tass news agency reported Monday.
The aviation base of the Long-Range Aviation deployed in Belogorsk was among those participating in the snap drills of the Eastern Military District.
"The personnel of the aviation base prepared Tu-95MS bombers for their strategic deterrence mission in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk," Itar-Tass quoted the defense ministry's press service as saying.
"Seven Su-7SM fighters deployed at airfields in Dzemgi (Komsomolsk-on-Amur), in Sokolovka (Ussuriysk) and Elizovo (the Kamchatka Peninsula) will be engaged to escort the Tu-95MS," the press service said.
The defense ministry said all flights of Russia's Air Force are carried out in strict compliance with international rules on the use of airspace over neutral waters without violating other countries' borders.
The drill, which started Saturday, is Russia's largest snap combat readiness military exercise since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
About 160,000 servicemen are participating in the military exercise, which also involved nearly 1,000 tanks and armored fighting vehicles, 130 aircraft from a wide range of units, and 70 naval ships.
