VLADIVOSTOK, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Ten people were killed as an An-28 aircraft crashed in the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East region on Wednesday, officials said.

The plan, carrying 12 passengers and two crew members, crashed when the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing 10 km from the Palana town, said a spokeswoman with the Far Eastern branch of the country's Emergency Situations Ministry.

Rescuers initially found nine bodies on the site of the accident. Four people were injured and one was missing.

According to latest reports, a child among the four injured died of severe injuries, thus putting the death toll at 10, said the spokeswoman.

Four survivors have been taken to hospital, officials said.

The plane lost contact with air control at 12:28 local time (0128 GMT), shortly before it was due to land at an airfield nearby.

It was on a flight from the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the village of Palana, investigators said.

A rescue team onboard an Mi-8 helicopter found the wreckage on a mountain slope some 10 km away from the Palana village.

Investigators from the Far Eastern Transport Investigation Department have been working at the scene. A probe into the incident is already under way, local officials said.

Kamchatka territory Governor Vladimir Ilyukhin declared Thursday as a mourning day for the victims of the crash.
