Death toll of garments factory fire in Pakistan rises to 65

11:15, September 12, 2012

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of a garment factory fire that broke out Tuesday evening in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi has risen to 65, reported local media on Wednesday morning.

Local Urdu TV channel Express quoted rescue workers and hospitals sources as saying that 65 people have been killed and some 30 others have been injured since the fire erupted at the factory about 12 hours ago.

Fire fighters faced difficulty in putting out the fire completely because they lacked water to refill their fire engines, said local media. Three hydrants located in the nearby areas of the factory ran out of water, they said.

In Pakistan, the two most scarce things for ordinary people's daily life are water and electricity.

Despite the heavy presence of fire fighters at the scene, the fire in the four-storeyed concrete factory building, located in the Baldia Town in the western part of Karachi, is still not put out completely and only the fire on the top floor of the building has reportedly been brought under control.

Local media reported that about 40 fire engines, accounting nearly for all the fire engines in the city, have been involved in putting out the fire.
