ANKARA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-five military personnel were killed and four others wounded in a huge blast of a military ammunition depot in central Turkey, Turkish military said Thursday.

The blast took place in an ammunition depot in the city of Afyonkarahisar at about 9:15 p.m. local time (1815 GMT) on Wednesday, the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces announced in a statement posted on its website.

The general staff said the cause of the incident was not immediately known.

The blast occurred between Atakoy neighborhood and Kanlica village of Afyonkarahisar, close to residential areas, said local newspaper Today's Zaman on its website Thursday.

Witnesses were quoted as saying that people took to the streets, thinking that it's an earthquake that shook their buildings and houses. Raging fire following the blast could be seen from many parts of the city.

Dozens of ambulances, fire fighters and search and rescue teams were dispatched to the area of the explosion, witnesses and officials said.
