Ghana's former president to join campaign for ruling party in December polls

15:10, September 01, 2012

ACCRA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings will join in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its 2012 electioneering campaign, his spokesperson said here Friday.

Speaking on local radio, Kofi Adams confirmed the participation of the ex-president to ensure the success of the NDC, saying: "President Rawlings has campaigned for the party all along and he will be part of the 2012 campaign."

Rawlings, founder of the NDC, at a special delegates' congress held in the Ashanti regional capital of Kumasi, 270 km north of Accra, on Thursday to endorse President John Dramani Mahama as the presidential candidate, called on other members of the party sitting on the fence to join the campaign trail.

The former Ghanaian leader fell out with his own party during the three-and-a-half-year reign of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, saying the government was departing from the NDC core values of probity, accountability and justice on which it was founded.

The acrimony between Rawlings and the NDC made most people conclude that the ex-president was not going to have anything to do with the party he founded in this year's general election.

There were even speculations in the Ghanaian media that Rawlings was not going to attend the party's special congress.

But the former president appeared at the congress grounds to admonish the government to deal with the bad nuts within the party, advising all disgruntled elements to join its campaign trail to ensure victory in the Dec. 7 polls.
