WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) --A high school student was shot on campus in the U.S. state of Maryland on Monday morning, the first day of the new academic year, local police said.

The shooting took place at Perry Hall High School, located in the northeastern Baltimore suburb of Perry Hall. The injured student, whose identity and extent of injury were not revealed, has been hospitalized, according to local authorities.

Baltimore County police said that they are investigating the case and holding a suspect in custody.

The Baltimore-located WJZ-TV showed video footage of a shirtless young man with his hands cuffed behind his back being put into a police cruiser.

Students have been evacuated and escorted to the nearby Perry Hall Shopping Center, where they can reunite with their parents, the police said.

Hundreds of parents and others gathered at the Perry Hall Shopping Center as police helicopters hovered overhead, according to a report by The Baltimore Sun.

Students were in the school's cafeteria when they heard a pop and soon realized what was happening, the local newspaper said, adding that local police did not believe the victim was targeted.

Perry Hall High School is the largest public high school in Baltimore County, enrolling over 2,000 students. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan visited the school last week to address 800 Baltimore County English teachers.
