Egypt to pursue a more active diplomatic approach

08:03, August 24, 2012

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Egypt will review its past foreign policies and reposition itself in global and regional issues to better serve its own interests, the country's ambassador to China told Xinhua in an interview Wednesday.

One of Egypt's aims is to reemerge as a key player to help settle ongoing conflicts in Africa and the Middle East. It has adopted a more active diplomatic approach after President Mohamed Morsi came to power on June 30 following a prolonged unrest in the country, Ambassador Ahmed Rezk said.

Morsi has also brought signs of change to his country, including his bid to rein in the military's influence over politics and society.

According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Morsi will visit China on Aug. 28-30 at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao. Morsi will also pay a visit to the United States on Sept. 23.

Rezk said Morsi will attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Iran on Aug. 30, which will make him the first Egyptian head of state to visit Iran in 30 years.

"Severing ties between Egypt and Iran may not be necessary," he said."Interest relationship (between the two countries) exists, as do objective views on each other's interests."
