U.S. drone strike kills 7 in NW Pakistan

13:24, July 30, 2012

ISLAMABAD, July 29 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and several others got injured on Sunday afternoon when a U. S. pilotless plane launched an attack in a northwestern tribal region of Pakistan, local media reported.

According to local Urdu TV channel Dunya, the U.S. drone fired four missiles at a suspected house in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan, Pakistan's northwestern restive tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The drone strike destroyed the compound completely, killing seven people and injured several other who were reportedly present inside when the missiles hit the building.

Shortly after the attack, local residents of the area started rescue work, taking out the bodies of the dead and the injured from the debris.

Pakistan has, on a number of occasions, protested and showed reservations over such attacks by the U.S. drones, claiming the attacks violate its sovereignty. Pakistani parliament also passed a resolution unanimously against the drone strikes.

U.S. and NATO forces fighting in Afghanistan believe that Pakistan's northwestern tribal regions are the safe heavens for the militants who allegedly attack NATO forces in Afghanistan and then run back to Pakistan.

According to reports, hundreds of innocent people have also been killed in the drone strikes as part of the collateral damage.
