Iran says enemies of Syria defeated: FM

09:48, July 26, 2012

TEHRAN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said Wednesday that enemies of Syria have been defeated, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

"The enemies of Syria have been defeated... and the Syrian army is step by step overpowering the militants," Salehi was quoted as saying.

Syria is moving to restore tranquillity, said the Iranian foreign minister after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Noting that the Syrian opposition should enter dialogue with the government, Salehi said that Iran is ready to mediate between the Syrian government and the opposition.

Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi rejected on Wednesday the presence of Iranian military forces in Syria, describing it as the foreign media propaganda to cover up the presence of foreign "terrorists" in that country, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iran, a close ally of Syria, said it strongly opposes to any form of foreign intervention in Syria, but called on the Syrian government to listen to its people's demands and carry out reforms.
