BRUSSELS, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Wednesday raised "serious concerns" for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary in Romania, according to its latest report.

"Romania needs to ensure respect for the rule of law and judicial independence to win back the trust of its partners in the EU, " it said, adding that the Commission would monitor the situation and give follow-up report.

Romanian President Traian Basescu was impeached by Romanian Parliament last month. But Prime Minister Victor Ponta was accused by many of plotting the impeachment in a power struggle.

A referendum is to be held on July 29th to decide whether the Basescu should be expelled from his office.

Last week, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy also expressed his deep concerns over the current political events in Romania during a meeting with Ponta.
