BELGRADE, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic on Monday reconfirmed Serbia's aspiration to join the European Union in a meeting with a delegation from the European Parliament (EP) here in Belgrade, local media reported.

Nikolic said Serbia would be working towards achieving European standards, as it was in Serbia's own interest to tackle problems such as crime and corruption along with issues related to privatization of state property, according to Radio Television Serbia (RTS).

Nikolic called Serbia's accession to the EU a "strategic goal" for which the country was required to do "a lot of work."

Eduard Kukan, who chairs the EP delegation for relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegr and Kosovo, expressed support for the commencement of negotiations between Serbia and the EU. He also welcomed the newly-elected president's commitment to continue his predecessor's EU accession policies.
