Over 14,000 Houstonians lose power during storms

09:55, July 13, 2012

HOUSTON, July 12 (Xinhua) -- More than 14,000 customers lost electricity as powerful thunderstorms rumbled through the U.S. city of Houston Thursday morning, local media reported.

The storms knocked out power to about 14,632 customers as of about 7:15 a.m. Thursday, the Houston Chronicle newspaper quoted local electricity provider CenterPoint Energy as saying.

Streets got flooded as the new round of thunderstorms and rain pounded the Houston area Thursday, for the sixth day in a row.

Flood warnings were issued for several southeast Texas counties. A flash flood was in place for all of southeast Texas through Thursday afternoon.

One of the hardest hit areas was in northwest Harris County, where street flooding and downed trees became a common sight, local TV reported.

Lightning reportedly struck two homes in a neighborhood. Some of the rain gauges picked up 5 to 7 inches of rain Thursday morning.

The U.S. National Weather Service forecast that the thunderstorms may move from northern Houston through the metropolitan area Thursday morning and then gradually taper off later in the day.

Officials have warned communities about possible flooding in some counties. They also noted that street flooding is possible in Houston, including downtown areas, as the storms push through the city.
