Controversial march sparks clash in Northern Ireland

09:06, July 13, 2012

LONDON, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of Protestants, or the so-called Orangemen, marched on Thursday in Northern Ireland in an annual token demonstration which was followed by clash.

Local media said that petrol bombs were thrown at police in north Belfast, while some rioters pushed a burning car towards police lines, adding that police used water cannon on rioters.

A bus was hijacked elsewhere in the city whereas police called on people to avoid the troubled areas, according to reports. Causalities were not yet clear.

July 12 was known historically as the Twelfth, or the Orangemen's Day, marked by celebrations by Protestant for the victory of Protestant king William of Orange of Catholic king James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

However, the marches have always been accompanied by violence as Catholics and Irish nationalists were against the celebration.
