Palestinian president reiterates conditions for meeting with Israeli PM

08:58, July 12, 2012

RAMALLAH, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told visiting U.S. envoy that he will never sit with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unless the latter takes adequate confidence-building measures, sources said Wednesday.

Abbas demanded again that Israel release Palestinian prisoners, especially those who were thrown into prison before 1993, during a meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, who visited Ramallah, the sources said.

Burns tried to persuade Abbas to meet Netanyahu, but Abbas said that Netanyahu should take steps to prove his positive attitude towards the peace process.

Peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians broke down in 2010 over a dispute on Jewish settlement activities in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
