SANAA, July 11 (Xinhua) -- A suicide bomber blew himself up among a crowd in front of a Yemeni police academy in the capital Sanaa on Wednesday, killing at least 20 cadets and injuring dozens of others, a security official told Xinhua as the Yemen-based al- Qaida group later claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

"More than 20 students of the police academy were killed and dozens of others wounded," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"Blood was splattered everywhere, and the whole area was cordoned off by the police while dozens of ambulances have arrived at the scene," he added.

Another police source told Xinhua that the attack was carried by "a car bomb in front of the main gate of the police academy while the students were going out after class."

Meanwhile, the Yemeni-based al-Qaida wing claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing attack on the police academy, in a text message obtained by Xinhua.

"We claim responsibility for the bombing against the police academy in Sanaa," the terrorist group said in a text message obtained by Xinhua without giving further details.
