Massive blasts, gunshots continue in Afghan cities

KABUL, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Blasts and gunshots continued in the eastern cities of Jalalabad and Gardez in Afghanistan and in Kabul as well, police and witnesses said Sunday.

A suicide car bomber and a walking suicide attacker stormed the gate of the office of NATO's provincial reconstruction team in Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar and 120 km east of Kabul, police told Xinhua.

Missiles have also been fired at the airport in Jalalabad and heavy smoke has been seen at the site, witnesses said.

Meanwhile, huge explosions followed by shootings have been heard at a police headquarters in downtown Gardez, the provincial capital of Paktia, witnesses said. At least seven people were injured including three police and four students, hospital sources in Gardez told Xinhua.

In capital Kabul, gun shots and blasts are still going on in several locations including the downtown Kabul Star hotel, the parliament house in the southwest and an intelligence base in the eastern part of the city. Security has been tightened up as many Afghan policemen have seen rushing to attack sites.

Local TV said Taliban militants claimed the massive coordinated attacks targeting NATO headquarters and foreign embassies in Kabul.
