South Africa tsunami watch lifted

CAPE TOWN, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Authorities have lifted South Africa's tsunami watch amid signs that the risk for the country's coastline to be hit by earthquake-ignited waves was low, it was announced here on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management Center (DRMC).

"This tsunami and earthquake alert does not warrant the authorities in South Africa to take any action,"DRMC spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

"Residents of Cape Town are advised to disregard the rumors of a tsunami and that the probability risk is low for the coastal areas of Cape Town,"he said.

Earlier in the day, South Africa was put under tsunami watch after an 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. But the SA Weather Service urged people not to panic, saying that no immediate action was required besides being aware of the warning.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.

The tremor, which struck under the sea off Indonesia's northern Aceh province, was felt as far away as Singapore, Thailand and India.

It reminds people of the giant 9.1-magnitude quake which hit Indonesia on Dec. 26, 2004, triggering a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed over 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.
