Bulgaria looking to build nuclear reactor: official

SOFIA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The Bulgarian government on Wednesday started preparations to add a new reactor in Kozloduy, the country's only nuclear power plant, two weeks after it suspended construction of a second power plant in Belene.

The cabinet will take a decision on the construction of a new nuclear reactor in Kozloduy reading a report by the economy minister Delyan Dobrev, the government said. He will also present a report on the legal and organizational requirements for the project.

On Friday, Bulgaria's opposition filed a no-confidence motion against the cabinet for stopping construction of the Belene power plant. The motion will be voted on by parliament on April 24.

The 2,000-megawatt plant in Belene was to be built by the Russian company Atomstroyexport.

Kozloduy has six reactors in total but only two of them -- with a capacity of 1,000MW each -- are in operation. The other four 440MW units were shut down in 2002 and 2006 as part of the conditions for Bulgaria joining the European Union.
