U.S. urges Sudan, S. Sudan for immediate end to hostilities

09:02, April 12, 2012

WASHINGTON, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The United States on Wednesday condemned the offensive military actions taken by Sudan and South Sudan, while calling for an immediate end to hostilities and return to the negotiating table by the two sides.

"The United States is deeply disturbed by the escalating hostilities between Sudan and South Sudan and condemns offensive military action by either side," the U.S. Statement Department said in a statement.

The statement condemns South Sudan's military attack on and seizure of the border region of Heglieg, calling it "an act which goes beyond self-defense and has increased tensions between Sudan and South Sudan to dangerous levels."

At the same time, the statement also blasts "the continued aerial bombardment in South Sudan by the Sudanese Armed Forces."

The U.S. demanded both governments agree to "an immediate unconditional cessation of hostilities", by withdrawing all forces that are deployed across the Jan. 1, 1956 border recognized by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, and ceasing all support to armed movements from the other state, the statement said.

Calling for avoiding unilateral offensive actions and exercising maximum restraint, the U.S. urges both Sudan and South Sudan to activate without delay the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism through UN Security Council Resolution 2024, authorizing the UN Interim Security for Abyei to assist them with investigations and monitoring along the border.

"We further urge the heads of state of both countries to meet in a summit as previously planned in order to advance negotiations on the issues that stand in the way of achieving true peace," the statement added.

Sudan and South Sudan have been at odds over how much the landlocked South should pay to export its oil through Sudan. The Sudanese parliament decided on Wednesday to announce a general mobilization and stop negotiations with South Sudan following a large-scale attack by the South Sudanese army on a strategic region of Heglieg.
