Egypt court suspends constituent assembly

CAIRO, April 10 (Xinhua) -- An Egyptian administrative court decided Tuesday to suspend the Islamists-dominated Constituent Assembly after it has been rejected by liberal and secular parties, state TV reported.

The court's decision will be a blow to the Islamist forces represented by the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)'s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and Salafist Nour Party. Both parties had at least 59 representatives in the 100-member assembly.

The assembly was elected by the upper and lower houses of parliament on March 24, with 50 from the parliament and 50 from institutions and public figures.

However, liberal parties strongly rejected the results due to the domination of Islamist parties. The Wafd Party, the Free Egyptian Party, the Al-Azhar and the Coptic Church have withdrawn their members from it.

Egypt's ruling military council has organized two meetings of different parties in a bid to defuse the crisis but failed.

In order to consolidate its political clout, the MB nominated its Deputy Chairman Khairat al-Shater as its presidential candidate and FJP chairman Mohamed Morsi to be Shater's back-up.

Twenty-three candidates have submitted their registration documents, the country's presidential election commission said on Sunday, the deadline of the registration. The final list will be announced on April 26 after qualification examination.

Egypt is scheduled to hold its presidential vote on May 23-24.
