MAPUTO, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The government of Mozambique is still not convinced over the ban to fly the European air space issued by the European Union and it demands explanations sustaining why it was once again prohibited of flying the area.

Mozambican Transport and Communications Minister Paulo Zucula said he is not clear about the reasons that led the EU to keep its decision of prohibiting national airlines from flying the European space, the Mozambique News Agency reported Monday.

"We are still waiting for a notification from the European Union. We do not know the reasons which led to such a measure because last year we were banned based on the report of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Although ICAO changed its mind, following the work we are doing, we do not know on what basis the European Union took this decision. We are currently looking for details on this decision," the minister said.

He explained that the work in progress undertaking by the government and the national civil aviation authorities has the intention to be admitted to the European spaces and to other spaces.

"The changes we are making are mainly to equip our country with international safety standards. We will continue to work," the minister said.

He said the government of Mozambique proposed the EU to integrate part of the auditors from ICAO to witness the work Mozambique is implementing in the civil aviation domain.

"The EU never audited us, so we would like them to come and see themselves the work we are doing," the minister said.

The last EU list with banned companies included 13 national companies among them the Mozambican Airlines Company LAM.
