DAMASCUS, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian government has pledged to stabilize the situation and safeguard reforms amid international calls on Syria to act quickly to implement a UN-backed peace plan.

Speaking to state TV on Friday, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said that the battle to bring down the Syrian state is over, while a new battle has begun to stabilize the situation, mobilize visions behind reform process and prevent those who want to keep that process from happening.

He said it's the government's obligation to explain to its citizens the background of diplomatic and political decisions, the content of UN-Arab League joint envoy Kofi Annan's mission and why the government has approved it.

Earlier in the week, Annan announced that Syria has accepted his six-point plan, which includes commitments to end violence, allow humanitarian assistance and permit protests.

In his first public comment on the peace plan, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Thursday his country would spare no efforts to make Annan's mission successful.

"Syria has informed Annan of its approval on the plan with some remarks," said Assad, calling for comprehensive consultations on the details of its application.

The Syrian crisis has grown more militarized as protesters, alleged army defectors and some Islamist groups took up arms to fight government forces.

At the same time, many countries urged both the Syrian government and opposition to act fast to carry out Annan's peace plan.

China on Friday called on Syria's opposition to respond to the peace plan as soon as possible.
