Nigerian militant sect kills two during bank raid in northern state

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, March 30 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic Boko Haram has shot dead a policeman and a man in an attack on a bank in the Nigeria northeast state of Borno.

A Xinhua reporter in the restive city of Maiduguri said the militia sect stormed a bank in a small community of Askira, about 274 km south of Maiduguri, midday and fired several gunshots into the bank and then set the structure ablaze after carting away undisclosed amount of money.

Boko Haram is listed as a terrorist organization which often launches bombing attacks in northern Nigeria recently.

State commissioner of police Bala Hassan who confirmed the incident to Xinhua Friday evening and said the attackers came with two Golf cars and shot scores of people who came to transact business at the bank.

"They took an undisclosed amount of money and burnt down the building," the police chief added.

According to him, one of the civilians shot by the sect died while others sustained injuries. He disclosed that the attackers took away a Camry car and shot dead a police sergeant as they fled the area.

Also in Maiduguri, the sect killed a man at Gomari Airport area at about 5 p.m. local time. Residents of the area said the victim relocated to the area few weeks ago. The assailants believed to be men of the Boko Haram sect were said to have trailed the man to the area and shot him.
