Cambodian PM urges ASEAN military to cooperate on disaster, anti-terrorism

13:34, March 30, 2012

PHNOM PENH, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday urged Chiefs of Defence Forces in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to mainly focus their cooperation on disasters and anti-terrorism.

The premier's advice was made during a meeting with the ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces led by Agus Suhartono, Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian National Defence Forces.

Hun Sen said the military cooperation among ASEAN member states has made significant progress in recent years, but there are still challenges including disaster fight cooperation such as flood or drought, trans-border crimes and anti-terrorism.

For the cross-border crimes and terrorism, he said, it was quite necessary for ASEAN Military Intelligence Units to constantly exchange spying information to prevent and crack down on these crimes timely.

Meanwhile, the premier also suggested that armed forces in the ASEAN be sent more abroad under the United Nations' global peacekeeping framework.

The ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces gathered here on Thursday for the 9th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces Informal Meeting ( ACDFIM).

The ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
