Sri Lanka police stations to be networked

09:39, March 29, 2012

COLOMBO, March 28 (Xinhua) -- All 430 police stations in Sri Lanka are to be linked into one network, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said the network is to advance the existing police service with current technology.

"Once the network is completed all the police stations in the country would be connected to the police headquarters throughout the day," Rohana said.

He said the network instead of the existing radio transmission will be greatly helpful in crime detection and other investigations.

All circulars, directives by the Inspector General of Police to police officers and police stations are to be communicated through the network.

"This will save time and money as it would not be necessary for police officers to come to capital Colombo to attend important discussions with the Inspector General of Police," said the spokesman.

The entire project is estimated to cost around 320,000 U.S. dollars.
