WASHINGTON, March 26 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday hailed the presidential election in Senegal, calling it "an important step" forward for democracy in Africa.

"The United States applauds the people of Senegal for conducting a peaceful and well-managed presidential election," the top U.S. diplomat said in a written statement.

"This election was an important step forward for democracy in Africa and for the Senegalese people," she remarked.

While congratulating Macky Sall, former prime minister of Senegal, on his victory in the run-off on Sunday, Clinton also thanked Abdoulaye Wade, the incumbent president who had sought a third term, for his twelve years of leadership and "dedicated service" to the Senegalese people.

"We congratulate all the Senegalese authorities and institutions responsible for the organization of the election process, which international and domestic observers agree was credible, orderly and transparent," she said.
