Annastacia Palaszczuk to become opposition leader in Australia

16:36, March 27, 2012

BRISBANE, Australia, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Queensland Labor caucus will meet on Wednesday to elect Annastacia Palaszczuk as opposition leader, local media reported Tuesday.

Palaszczuk, the former transport minister, confirmed her intention on Tuesday to be the party's next leader as she had the support of the Labor caucus, according to reports of the Australian Associated Press (AAP).

Former Premier Anna Bligh stepped down as Labor leader after the party's worst ever defeat in Saturday's state election.

Labor is expected to hold eight seats in the 89-seat parliament, although the election counting has not finished.

Palaszczuk said she was under no illusion about the task ahead.

"We may be small in size but we have the determination to do the right thing by Queenslanders," she told reporters on Tuesday.

"It's going to be an uphill battle, it's going to be like climbing Mount Everest, but I'm sure that we can do it."

Palaszczuk said it was Labor's job to keep the government delivering on its election promises.

"Cost of living is high on the agenda, that's what the LNP ( Liberal National Party) has promised to deliver and we will make sure they will deliver on these promises."
