Dominican Republic seizes 1.5 tons of cocaine

15:25, March 26, 2012

SANTO DOMINGO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Dominican Republic anti-narcotics agents have seized 1.5 tons of cocaine and arrested three Venezuelan citizens, officials said Sunday.

It was announced by President of the National Anti-Drug Bureau (DNCD), Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, at a press conference.

The cocaine was intercepted in waters off the coast of Juan Dolio, 45 km from the country's capital of Santo Domingo.

Agents found the cocaine, shipped in 1,236 packages, on a 40-foot boat which left Colombia last Friday night and landed here early Sunday, said Rosado.

Agents also arrested Richard Chirino, Eliezer Hernandez and Cruz Natera Fermin -- the three Venezuelans that form part of a Colombian drug-trafficking ring that, according to Rosado, works for Ramon Rosario Puente, a Dominican drug trafficker who was extradited to Puerto Rico last December.

The three detainees were equipped with high-tech night vision and communication devices that agents also seized on the boat, said Rosado.
