1 dead, two shot in fans clash in Sao Paulo

09:01, March 26, 2012

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- A clash between fans killed at least one person on Sunday before the match even took place between arch rivals Corinthians and Palmeiras in the Sao Paulo state championship,

The 21-year-old Palmeiras fan Andre Alvez was shot in the head during one of the many fights that broke out surrounding the Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo. Alvez was taken to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced brain dead.

Witnesses say that a group of Palmeiras fans were circled by a rival fan base of Corinthians at a gas station. The Corinthians fans were armed with sticks, metal bars and chains. Many shots were heard as one of them hit Alvez.

In another fight between an estimated 500 hooligans, two people were shot and four were arrested.

The widespread fighting that took place between the two factions is an apparent reaction and revenge of last year's killing of Corinthians fan Douglas Karin Silva, allegedly killed and dumped into the Tiete River by Palmeiras fans.

The constant fighting that takes place when big teams clash causes the public to worry about their safety. Shop owners have learned from experience: once it appears that a fight may break out, they quickly close the store in order to avoid property damage and theft.
