WASHINGTON, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Taking a public stand on the issue for the first time, U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday said the killing of black teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida is a "tragedy," and should be investigated thoroughly.

After announcing the nomination of Jim Yong Kim to be president of the World Bank, Obama made the statement to a shoutout question from the press corps present at the White House announcement, saying it is "absolutely imperative" to investigate every aspect of the killing in Feb. 26, which has incited mass protests across the nation.

Martin, a 17-year-old high school student, was fatally shot while walking to the house of his father's fiancee in a gated community in Sanford, Florida. George Zimmerman, 28, a neighborhood watch volunteer, said he shot the teen in self-defense, and has not been arrested.

The incident gained national attention and many, including the Martin family, believe that race was a factor.
