BRISBANE, Australia, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Queensland Liberal National Party (LNP) Leader Campbell Newman is on track to win the seat of Ashgrove in a tightening contest against Labor incumbent Kate Jones, a new opinion poll published by The Australian newspaper showed Friday.

The Newspoll showed Newman's primary vote in the electoral district of Ashgrove is steady at 49 percent, while Jones is at 44 percent after luring away Greens support.

The poll said Newman has 52 percent support on a two-party- preferred basis, while Jones gets 48 percent of the vote.

But the momentum is with Jones, who has cut Newman's lead by six points on two-party-preferred basis since the last Newspoll in the seat nine months ago.

The poll showed 53 percent voters in Ashgrove still want Jones as preferred Member of Parliament, outscoring Newman by 43-53 percent.
