WASHINGTON, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the United States and Britain on Monday boasted of the alliance between their countries, calling it "a partnership of the heart."

"The alliance between the United States and Great Britain is a partnership of the heart, bound by the history, traditions and values we share," President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron wrote in a joint article published by The Washington Post online.

Cameron is scheduled to start a three-day visit to the United States on Tuesday, an occasion for him to discuss with Obama such hot-button issues as Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, the upheavals in the Middle East and North Africa and the upcoming G8 and NATO summits, in addition to the "special and essential relationships" between London and Washington, as the White House put it.

"But what makes our relationship special -- a unique and essential asset -- is that we join hands across so many endeavors," Obama and Cameron wrote.

They dwelled on the close coordination and cooperation between their countries on Afghanistan, Iran and Syria, among others.

The pair vowed to carry on the mission in Afghanistan, saying "As the two largest contributors to the international mission in Afghanistan, we're proud of the progress our troops have made in dismantling al-Qaida, breaking the Taliban's momentum and training Afghan forces."
