Arab delegations to visit Jerusalem upon Abbas invitation

13:29, March 08, 2012

RAMALLAH, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Several official Arab delegations are soon to visit east Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories upon the invitation of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas office in Ramallah said.

When Abbas attended the International Conference for Jerusalem held in Qatar in late February, he invited several Arab and Islamic delegations to visit in the occupied eastern part of the holly city and in the Palestinian territories.

Nabil Abu Rdineh, spokesman of the Palestinian Presidency said in a statement published by the state-run news agency "Wafa" that the Arab delegations, which will visit in Jerusalem are from Tunis, Bahrain, Jordan and other countries.

"The delegations will visit in the holy city and in the Palestinian territories to back and aid the Palestinian people, mainly the residents of Jerusalem. The visit is to show that this occupied part of the city is Arab," said Abu Rdineh.

The senior Palestinian official didn't say if there is a specific date for the delegations visits to Jerusalem, however, a well-informed Palestinian source told Xinhua that the visits will be soon after it is coordinated and arranged.

Abbas had told the conference in Doha that "visiting the prisoner doesn't mean a recognition of the jailer," referring to many Arab and Islamic delegations who refrain from visiting in Jerusalem saying it is still under Israel's occupation.

The Arab countries, except Jordan and Egypt, still refuse to recognize Israel and refuse to launch diplomatic ties with Israel. The world doesn't recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Palestinians want the eastern part of the city to be the capital of their future Palestinian state, while Israel says that Jerusalem is united and it is the eternal capital of the state of Israel.
