British FM says talks with Iran showcase "commitment to diplomatic solution"

16:22, March 07, 2012

LONDON, March 6 (Xinhua) -- British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Tuesday said resuming talks with Iran about its nuclear program showcased the international "commitment to a diplomatic solution," urging Iran to take "concrete actions."

Hague made the comment hours after European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said that she had accepted an Iranian offer to discuss Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

The E3+3 countries -- Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Russia and China -- "all agree that the international community should demonstrate its commitment to a diplomatic solution by acknowledging Iran's agreement to meet," Hague said.

He urged Iran to take "concrete actions" to convince the international community that its nuclear program was exclusively peaceful.

"We have always been ready to respond positively by offering assistance with the development of Iran's civil nuclear power stations, and extending co-operation in other areas from political relations to economic development," he added.
