UN development meeting to focus on green economy: Brazil official

09:35, March 01, 2012

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- The upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) will focus on green economy and sustainable governance, Brazil's Environment Minister Isabella Teixeira said Wednesday.

Teixeira said that the Rio+20 conference, which will be held here in June, is not to be regarded as a review of the 1992 Earth Summit, which was also held in Rio.

"This is not about going back to the past or reviewing previous agreements. Rio+20 will not follow the 1992 Conference, but instead it has two key messages: green economy and sustainable governance," she said.

Other topics to be addressed in June include technology transfer from developed to developing countries and the reconstruction of the UN Environment Program, Teixeira said.

Weeks ago, Teixeira said the June summit may have a high-level representation with more than 100 heads of state or government.

A broad range of issues, including growth, food security, access to water, lifestyles, energy, diversity and climate, will be discussed at the Rio+20 conference, regarded as the fourth most important summit on sustainable development since 1972.
