Arizona policeman demoted over posting Obama image on Facebook

17:01, February 29, 2012

BEIJING, Feb. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- An Arizona police sergeant who posted a photo of a bullet-riddled image of U.S. President Barack Obama on Facebook was dropped in rank to officer from police sergeant, U.S. authorities said on Tuesday.

Patrick Shearer, a 25-year-veteran of the Peoria, Arizona, posted a photo on his Facebook account showing youths with guns posing with an apparently bullet-ridden T-shirt with a picture of Obama on it.

The photo on Shearer's Facebook profile showed four of seven teenagers were toting guns and one was holding what appeared to be a shot-up Obama T-shirt. The image was removed soon after it was posted.

Shearer told a local television he took the picture and did not consider it "that big of a deal." He called it a "political statement," adding he would give his life for the president.

Minter said he expected employees to exercise sound judgment and not bring discredit to the city and the police department.

Details of the probe were not released because the appeals process has not been concluded, police officials said.

Shearer has 10 days to appeal.
