Seven killed in bomb attacks in Iraq

16:37, February 29, 2012

BAGHDAD, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and 14 wounded in car bomb and roadside bomb attacks on Wednesday, the police said.

In Baghdad, a booby-trapped car detonated in the morning in the eastern district of al-Ameen, killing three people and wounding 11 others, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Iraqi security forces sealed off the scene as ambulances, police and civilian vehicles evacuated the victims to Baghdad hospitals and medical centers, the source said.

In Iraq's central province of Salahudin, a second car bomb went off at about 9:00 a.m. (0600 GMT) near a joint police and Iraqi army patrol in a village near the city of Toz-Khurmato, some 180 km north of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and a policeman, a provincial police source anonymously told Xinhua.

The powerful blast also destroyed two military vehicles, the source said.

Salahudin province, located in northern-central Iraq, is a Sunni-dominated province. Its capital city of Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, is the hometown of the former President Saddam Hussein.

In Iraq's western province of Anbar, a roadside bomb struck a civilian car on a main road near the city of Hit, some 160 km west, killing a civilian and wounding three others aboard, a source from the provincial operations command told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Iraqi cities have been plagued by several attacks, including suicide bombings, since the U.S. troops pulled out of the country late last year.
