SANTIAGO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least five people died and 96 others were injured Tuesday in a bus accident in Chile's southern Biobio region, according to a police report.

The accident happened shortly before 1430 local time (0530 GMT) on Highway 5 when the driver lost control of the bus after it was hit by a vehicle and then turned over in the middle of the highway.

A total of 19 people who were seriously injured were taken to a hospital in the nearby town of San Carlos for treatment, said the report.

The bus belonged to a transport company which traffic officials said had been involved in a series of similar accidents in recent months.
