BAGHDAD, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- A total of 46 people were killed and 272 others wounded in a new wave of bombings and gunfire attacks mostly targeted Iraqi security forces across Iraq on Thursday, in what appeared to be an attempt by insurgent groups to destabilize the country ahead of the Arab summit scheduled in late March in the capital Baghdad.

The most deadly attacks occurred during the morning's rush hour in Baghdad when four car bombs, six roadside bombs and gunfire attacks killed 20 people and left 64 wounded.

One of the car bomb attacks struck a restaurant in the northern district of Kadhmiyah and killed six people and wounded 15 others, while another occurred when insurgents opened fire on a police checkpoint in Sarafiyah in central Baghdad, killing six and wounding three others, most of them were policemen.

Meanwhile, in Salahudin province in central-northern Iraq, four car bomb attacks and a gunfire killed a total of 13 people and wounded up to 49 others.

The deadliest attack in the province occurred in the city of Balad, some 80 km north of Baghdad, when a car bomb ripped through the city, claiming up to seven lives and wounding 32 others.

Separately, a car bomb parked near a court in the city of Baiji, some 200 km north of Baghdad, detonated during rush hour in the morning, killing three people and wounding five others.

Another car bomb ripped through the city of Dujail, some 60 km north of Baghdad, killing a civilian and wounding four people.
