U.S. National Cathedral needs over 20 mln USD to fix quake damage

09:05, February 24, 2012

WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Washington National Cathedral will need more than 20 million U.S. dollars to fix the damage it suffered from a major earthquake last summer, the cathedral said Thursday.

"The repair work, which includes intricate stone carving and detailed masonry, and will require significant scaffolding and large cranes to access the damaged areas, could be completed in five years if sufficient funds are raised immediately," the cathedral said in a statement.

"The total cost estimate for all phases of the stabilization and earthquake restoration work has risen to more than 20 million dollars (from the original estimate of 15 million dollars)," it said.

On August 23, 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the East Coast of the United States, causing significant damage to the cathedral.

Most of the damage occurred in the highest parts of the cathedral. The earthquake's force most strongly affected the pinnacles of the central tower, where stones were literally shaken apart. In addition, the pinnacles atop many buttresses rotated.

In the first six months following the earthquake, a total of 2 million dollars was raised to carry out the first phase of the restoration, the cathedral said.
