Hamas denies involvement in Egypt's unrest

08:44, February 24, 2012

CAIRO, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Hamas leader in Gaza Ismail Haneya denied that the Islamic movement had involved in Egypt's unrest last year, as claimed by Egyptian former Interior Minister Habib Adly, state media reported Thursday.

In the final day of ex-President Hosni Mubarak's trial, Adly blamed elements from Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Islamic Hamas movement for sending infiltrators to break the line of peaceful protests, creating chaos and sabotaging.

Haneya strongly denied Adly's accusations by saying that "Hamas did not interfere in Egypt's internal affairs, either before or after the revolution," Egypt's official news agency MENA reported.

He also denied any disputes inside Hamas movement, adding that his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reflected their commitment to achieve reconciliation and unity.

The verdict for the trial of Mubarak, Adly and his six aides, who were accused of killing 846 people during Jan. 25 demonstrations, has been set for June 2.
