Sweden reports highest emigration figure last year

09:31, February 21, 2012

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The emigration figure in Sweden in 2011 was recorded as the highest since 1887 while the immigration figure decreased last year, announced the Swedish Central Statistics Bureau (SCB) on Monday.

Last year, the number of emigrates in Sweden amounted to 51,179 persons while the number of immigrates was 96,467, the SCB said in a statement.

The highest emigration figure can be explained by the globalization of the world.

"I can imagine that when Swedish companies move abroad many Swedish people would follow the companies," Lena Bernhardtz from the SCB was quoted by the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter as saying.

Apart from the Scandinavian countries and English-speaking countries, China came in the seventh place in the destination countries last year, which could probably explained by the demand for Swedish employees of Swedish companies in China, added Bernhardtz.

During the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, about 1,5 million Swedes emigrated to the United States due to the agricultural crisis in Sweden, according to the SCB.
